The Lismore Castle Gardens are believed to be the oldest in Ireland retaining much of their original Jacobean form.Lismore Castle Arts In 1999, several pieces of contemporary sculpture were installed in the garden including one by Anthony Gormley, best known for the massive Angel of the North which overlooks the motorway at Gateshead in the north of England. Throughout the open season there is always plenty of interest in this fascinating and beautiful garden. There is also a fine selection of magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons and a remarkable yew walk where Edmund Spenser is said to have written the Faerie Queen. A new contemporary art gallery is open in the West Wing of Lismore Castle. Borrowing from the Castle's idyllic location and unique atmosphere, the gallery itself is nonetheless an entirely modern and exciting space, and conforms to international standards for exhibition and display.
