The walk from Passage East to Cheekpoint takes you between two historic and beautiful villages in the east coast of County Waterford.Passage East to Cheekpoint
Leave Passage East on the Waterford Road as it begins to ascend uphill, parallel to the river. The village of Ballyhack eventually comes into view on the far side of the river. The road here bends left to take you away from the river and after walking around a 'S' bend, take the next turn right into a boreen. This road, which is the old road between Passage East and Cheekpoint, travels up the hill known as Hurt Hill giving visitors a view of the harbours of Waterford and Wexford from its summit. Going back to the Boreen, follow it as you begin to descend once more. Turn right on to a narrow, grassy pathway and follow it as it travels beside the hill. Directly after coming into the open area, the path turns and begins to travel steeply downhill. The path eventually reaches the river, and visitors find themselves on the shore near the pier. Making sure the tide is not rising, continue along the shore, turn left and follow a sea-wall towards the house in the distance. After a short distance, you will meet a road which should be followed to the main road. After turning left with the road, turn right down a narrow laneway that will lead you to Cheekpoint Harbour. To return to Passage East, you can retrace your steps or else follow the main road back to Waterford, and soon after passing the school on the left, take the first turn left that will lead you back to the boreen over Hurt Hill. |
