Woodstown Strand on the Waterford coastline has remained relatively unchanged over the past century and therefore has managed to remain largely unspoiled.Woodstown Strand
Upon reaching the t-junction at the beach, turn right and then left to park overlooking the sea. Woodstown is a tidal beach and twice a day when the tide is out, it leaves large sandflats that play host to large numbers of waders and wildfowl. Begin your walk along the strand and along the way you will see Weir House; the owners of which once owned the rights to the great fish weir of Woodstown, the remnants of which you see extruding out into the sea. Take in the beauty of the tree-lined headland that seems to stretch across to the Wexford coast, nearly four miles away. As an alternative to walking back by the beach, a lane beside the Rosminian Retreat House will take you back to join the road. Turn left and follow this road, passing the Saratoga Bar along the way. The last stretch back to the carpark passes a reed marsh rich in bird life, which long ago was probably a lagoon divided from the sea by a spit which has become Woodstown Strand. |
