Heritage Sites in CappoquinCappoquin House (18th century) Cappoquin House, in the centre of town, is an 18th Century Georgian mansion built on the site of an old Fitzgerald Castle. The house and gardens enjoy magnificent views over the River Blackwater. The Keane Family has lived in Cappoquin House for over 200 years. Mount Melleray Abbey (1830's) Mount Melleray Abbey is a Cistercian Abbey that was founded in the 1830's by Irish Cistercian monks. Mount Melleray is situated in the foothills of the Knockmealdown Mountains, four miles north of Cappoquin. This abbey was established when a group of monks were forced to leave France and they came to Ireland to build a monastery under the leadership of Fr. Vincent Ryan, a Waterford man. They were given a tract of mountain land by Sir Richard Keane near Cappoquin in County Waterford and so in 1832 Mount Melleray Abbey was completed. Tourin House (1840) Tourin house and gardens are situated 3 miles south of Cappoquin. Tourin House was completed in 1840 using stone from the original early Georgian structure. Tourin gardens are a joy to behold and were originally laid out on the advice of Richard Beamish, a great friend of Sir Richard Musgrave and part owner of the Beamish and Crawford Brewery in Cork. Glorious displays of rare azalea, magnolia and rhododendron varieties delight the eye. Salterbridge House (19th century) Salterbridge house and gardens are located on the Lismore/Cappoquin road (N72). A Victorian country home with a garden filled with camellias, magnolias, rhododendrons and many more shrubs and trees. |
