Heritage Sites in Clashmore

Old Distillery (1800's)

The Old Distillery, which stopped production around 1840, is situated on River Greagagh at the far end of Clashmore village. The Earl of Huntingdon, Lord Hasting commissioned the build of the distillery and it was run by the Dennehy family. At its peak the distillery produced approximately 20,000 gallons of whiskey annually. The adjoining house to the distillery had a secret cellar used to store illicit whiskey to avoid the excise duty.

St. Declan's Well

St. Declan's Well is located in Toor, near Clashmore. While its origins are vague and there is no mention of it in any local literature, it has become a diocesan-approved attraction. The Well's name comes from a story that tells of how St. Declan drank from it on his way to Cashel. Recently, the area has been landscaped and has been compared in appearance to Lourdes. To reach the well, visitors travel along the R671 from Clashmore to Clonmel, following signs for the 'Holy Well'.

St. Mochua's Well

St. Mochua’s Well is located just outside the village of Clashmore. Surrounded by a circular wall, Stations of the Cross were said here in the past every year on February 10th, but this practice however has long been discontinued. There is a legend that tells of how the well used to be found on the opposite side of the village but was miraculously transported to its present location after some sacrilegious treatment.
