Peeping though the tree tops, the spire of St. Carthage’s Cathedral was built in 1827 by the Paine brothers and continues to stand tall in among its imposing surroundings.

St. Carthage's Cathedral

Beyond the tall Gothic gates lies St. Carthage’s Cathedral with its cobbled paths and an abundance of history. What you see of the present Cathedral dates from 1630 and was built was the Earl of Cork Richard Boyle, although some of the structure has been altered and extended since. The first stone Church was built on this site in the 1200’s and gravestone slabs from monastic times can be found on the wall of the Cathedral.

St. Carthage's Cathedral The Edward Burne Jones window is situated on the left as you enter the Cathedral, only two stained glass windows designed by Burne Jones in Irish Cathedrals, the other one in the Organ Gallery in Trim, Co. Meath. The McGrath tomb can be found at the end of the Cathedral, dating from 1486 this remarkable table tomb has some of the most exquisite carvings and illustrations.

As you walk through the Cathedral make sure you stop and look up at the ceiling and be in awe of the spectacular ribbed ceiling by Richard Morrison. For a guided tour of the historic town of Lismore including St. Carthage's Cathedral contact Lismore Heritage Centre on 00353 (0)58 54975.
