West Waterford Driving Trail

This 108km trail begins and ends in the harbour town of Dungarvan with exciting activities and attractions as well as festivals such the Waterford Festival of Food and Féile na nDéise. You begin you drive along the N72 driving straight on for about 9km before turning left towards the R671. Continue straight on until you come to the first village on the trail Aglish and from here follow the signs for Villierstown. Villierstown is a quaint village and from here continue through the gate like structure along the tree line road until you reach Cappoquin. Along the way you will have breathtaking views of the Knockmealdown Mountains and you will then have to cross over the Gothic Hindu Dromana Bridge.

In Cappoquin drive out of the town heading on the N72 and take the first left over the bridge, here you can enjoy views of the river Blackwater until you reach Tallow. Drive on for about 2km before turning left and then take the nest left again. Travel straight on for 2.5km before having to turn left and then continue on for just over 3km. Turn left once more before turning right and continue on for just over 5km until you reach Tallow.

On leaving Tallow you have two choices either tackle the steep hill or continue along the hair pin turn and travel straight on for about 6km until you reach picturesque Lismore. If you wish to take a break here you could take some time to visit the Lismore Heritage Centre or Lismore Castle Gardens or on the right time of year bask in the delight of the festival goers at Immrama.

From Lismore travel over the bridge and take the second left and continue on you drive through the small winding roads until you reach the wonderful Vee Gap. This rugged mountainous area, covered in the alluring colours from rhododendron in the spring and summer months, has some amazing scenery. From the Vee Gap return the way you came and turn left following the signs for Melleray. Drive straight on this narrow R669 for about 13km until you return back into Cappoquin and from here continue the drive by heading south on the N72 and retrace the route back into Dungarvan.
