Take in the local beauty of Lismore one of the many walks along the River Blackwater, in among tall trees or along the rugged mountainside.

Lady Louisa's Walk

The Towers Walk - Gatelodge This river side trail with its tranquil setting and breathtaking views is perfect for an evening stroll. The entrance to Lady Louisa's walk is located on the right before to cross over Lismore Bridge and the path runs adjacent to the River Blackwater, looping back around by St. Carthage's Cathedral.

You can take in the natural environment with the many flowers and trees on the trail as well as bird and animal wildlife and the added bonus of the breathtaking views of Lismore Castle. (Distance: 0.8km/0.5miles)

The Knockmealdown Mountains

The Knockmealdown Mountains walk brings you along a compact range bordering counties Waterford and Tipperary with amazing views and beautiful wildflowers. Begin your walk from Glentanagree Bridge and set out uphill across heathery ground gradually bearing away from Glenandaree stream. After about two km of a steady climb the ground will begin to level off. Follow the boundary wall between Waterford and Tipperary north westwards towards Sugar Loaf. From here embrace the views from the coast to neighbouring Mountain gaps.

Rejoin the line of the boundary wall and begin ascending again to Sugar Loaf Hill. At the summit of Sugar Loaf the wall turns left and follows the wall steeply downhill to the road above the Vee. From here follow the track to the left towards Baylough. Follow the road southwards for about two km to reach your starting point again. (Distance: 10km/ 6.25 miles)

The Towers Walk

The Towers Walk is a short walk in charming woodland enriched with wonderful flora and fauna, which does not reflect the sad period in Irish history where extravagance and starvation lived side by side. This magical place is located 3km outside Lismore with the wood planted with many trees such as oak, ash, horse chestnut and many fir trees but the most amazing thing about the towers walk is the gothic styled Gatelodge and Bridge built during the times of the famine by Arthur Kiely Ussher. You can follow the path over the bridge and down under a servant’s bridge and continue your walk down the long straight path adjacent to the river flowing down from the mountains. (Distance: 2.5km/ 1.5 miles)

Town Walk

The Town Walk begins at the Heritage Centre bringing you along New Street and from here you can take the second left and past the Old Railway Station before passing the Old Famine Graveyard and St. Carthage’s Church. You can continue down South Mall where on a clear day you could see captivating views of the Knockmealdown Mountains in the distance and in front of you is St. Carthage’s Cathedral. You can return back down Main Street to the Heritage Centre or you can turn right until you reach Lismore Bridge and the spectacular view of Lismore Castle.

This walk can be done with the aid of a trained guide from Lismore Heritage Centre or you can purchase a self guide booklet from the craft shop in Lismore Heritage Centre. (Distance: 1.5km/ 1 mile)
