Training Spins Launched

Date: 09 May 2008

The second Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford (which was launched by the man himself over a month ago) will take place this year on Sunday August 24th. Entries are coming in thick & fast for this year’s event, the closing date for guaranteed entry is Friday 8th August. Participants have signed up from almost every county in Ireland as well as the UK and there are also a number of entries from as far a field as the USA and Canada. The advice from the organisers is to enter early and don’t miss out.

Once you have entered all thoughts will turn towards your training for whichever event you choose from either the 50k Cruise, 100k Legacy or the 160k Comeragh Challenge. Remember the 50k route is ideal for beginners and those with limited cycling experience. It is also perfect as a family fun day with the lower age limit being 10 years of age and only €10 to enter for any rider under 16 years, while the entry fee for over 16’s is a mere €20 for the Cruise and €30 for the Legacy and the Comeragh Challenge routes.

Organised Meet & Train Spins skt committee_skt
The Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford Committee are very excited to announce that this year will see the first ever organised ‘training spins’ which will take place at various locations around the county and neighbouring counties over the course of the summer in the lead up to the Tour itself. Whether you are just starting out and need advice on training or your bike, you may be already cycling and want to improve, you may want to find a group or club in your locality to train with or you may just want to meet new people and get fit at the same time.
Whatever the reason these meet and train sessions are for you!

Clonmel to host first ‘Meet & Train’ session
First up will be Clonmel at 7 p.m. on Friday 23rd May to coincide with the ‘cycling fever’ which will have gripped the town after the visit of the FBD Insurance Rás earlier that day. The meeting point is at Suir Island, Clonmel just outside the premises of Worldwide Cycles. All we ask you to bring is your bike (it does not have to be a top light-weight model, whatever you are used to cycling will be fine as long as it is roadworthy), a helmet is compulsory for everyone so please, please invest in a cycling helmet if you don’t already have one as we don’t want anyone to go home disappointed, finally a pair of cycling shorts, while not obligatory would be advisable! There will be a distance to suit everyone and riders will be accompanied at all times by experienced club cyclists who will be only too delighted to offer advice on any aspect of cycling. The contact person for this first training spin is Barry Meehan who can be contacted at 052-21146. Non Cycling Ireland members (which will be most participants on these spins) must pay €3 to cover the cost of Cycling Ireland insurance for the duration of the training cycle.

Thanks to the ongoing support of the 8 cycling clubs involved with the Sean Kelly Tour, the ‘meet and train’ sessions will go on tour after Clonmel. The next town to host a training evening is Carrick-on-Suir, followed by Dungarvan, Waterford and Youghal. These will take place over the months of June and July, with dates, times and meeting points being announced on the website and in the local press over the coming weeks.
