First Sean Kelly Tour Training Spin is a Big Success

Date: 05 Jun 2008

The Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford again takes place over 3 distances of 50k, 100k and 160k on 24th August 2008. In the meantime to whet the appetites of all of those cycling enthusiasts out there the Sean Kelly Tour Committee are orgainising training rides in and around the county over the course of the summer.

Clonmel was the location for the first of the Sean Kelly Tour organised training sessions which took place on the 23rd May. It was a great success and was hugely beneficial for those who took part, most of whom were new to cycling. Barry Meehan of Worldwide Cycles Clonmel organised the spin with the help of Jim O’Keeffe and Carlos Ames of Carrick Touring club. Barry gave those present on the night a run through the bike and bike position before heading out on the road taking in the familiar Clonmel-Kilsheelin-Clonmel loop which encompasses part of the actual Sean Kelly route.

For the seven ‘new’ riders who turned up on the night it was great to get experience of riding in a group as well as getting useful tips on training from some of the ‘older kids on the block’. The Sean Kelly Tour Committee wishes to thank and congratulate Barry, Jim and Carlos for organising  the first of the Sean Kelly Training Spins.

All roads lead to Carrick

The second training ride takes place very near to the home of the great man himself in and around the environs of Carrick-on-Suir. We hope that a few who have already entered and have yet to dip their toe in the cycling waters will make a date for Tuesday June 10th for the Carrick leg of these very valuable meet & train sessions. There will be a level here to suit everyone and the spins are particularly aimed at beginners. The meeting point is St. Mollerans GAA club at 7 p.m. on Tuesday 10th June. If you require any further information on this training session please contact Bobby Power, Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers at 087-6530186.

Remember if you cannot make the Carrick spin there is no need to panic as the Sean Kelly Training spins will continue ‘on tour’ with dates to be announced in Dungarvan, Youghal and Waterford City all of course building up to the big day itself which takes place this year on 24th August.

The Tour organisers want to offer help and advice to anyone wishing to get in the saddle for the first time. If you log on to the Tour website you will find specially designed training programmes for the three distances. These should help you to complete and enjoy your chosen route on the day.
