Training Spins Gather MomentumDate: 13 Jun 2008Carrick-on-Suir hosted the second Sean Kelly Tour training spin and it was very well attended. 3 groups of riders departed from St. Mollerans Field (by kind permission) over 3 different distances of 15k, 25k and 40k. All of those present intend on participating in the Sean Kelly Tour in August over one of the three distances.
It was a fine evening which greeted the 18 riders who took to the roads outside Carrick and around the environs of north Co.Waterford including such beauty spots as Glencomeragh, Glenpatrick and Rathgormack. Each of the training spins is organised by a club or clubs that are members of the Sean Kelly Tour committee. This week it was the turn of Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers and Carrick Touring Club, after Worlwide Cycles had put on a great training evening in Clonmel two weeks previously. It was great to see a broad range of very enthusiastic cyclists at this second meet and train session. Riders came not only from Carrick but from other areas of both Waterford and South Tipperary. All agreed it was a very useful exercise as the benefit of cycling in a group cannot be understated. It was also an opportunity to seek advice from some experienced cyclists and best of all it was a lot of fun!
The partners on the Sean Kelly Tour committee would like to thank Bobby Power who organised the session. Bobby was very ably assisted by Martin O’Loughlin, Jim O’Keeffe and John Brunnock. The third training ride takes place in Dungarvan which of course will host the start and finish of the tour itself in August. For all of those who have attended Clonmel or Carrick or both this will be a great opportunity to get even more miles under the belt. For those yet to venture out why not make a date for Sunday 22nd June in your diary. Again a number of different groups will depart from Grattan Square, Dungarvan at 10a.m. There will be a distance here to suit everyone with Ger Wyley and his team at Dungarvan Credit Union Cycling Club working hard behind the scenes to ensure that everyone from complete beginners to more experienced riders will be catered for. Each participant will be required to pay €2 to cover the cost of insurance for the duration of this cycle. If you require any further information on this training session please contact Ger Wyley at 058-42059.
The Tour organisers want to offer help and advice to anyone wishing to get in the saddle for the first time. If you log on to the Tour website you will find specially designed training programmes for the three distances. These should help you to complete and enjoy your chosen route on the day. back to News |
