Lismore is one of the most historic towns in County Waterford dating back from 636 when St. Carthage first came and set up the famous monastery, to the many famous steps taken by the likes of Fred Astaire and William Thackeray.

Lismore prides itself on its beauty and was rewarded in 2004 when it was named National Tidy Towns winner and has won a gold medal every year since in this competition. Lismore has also been named the tidiest town in the county for the past six years and in 2005 won the gold award in Entente Forale.

Lismore Castle The name Lismore comes from two words, Lios meaning 'fort' and Mor meaning 'great' and it was from these words that Lismore was made into a great place of learning and a great place of holiness. Despite being ransacked numerous times by the Vikings, Lismore retained a huge influence in the Kingdom of the Deise and in 1185 the prestigious Lismore Castle was built by Prince John overlooking the River Blackwater.

River Blackwater With some of the most breathtaking scenery in the county, one of the best ways to witness the views would be to go on one of the leisurely Walks or take on one of the Cycling Routes or Drives along the River Blackwater or through the Knockmealdown Mountains.
